Microsoft Word - Rich Text Format

Rich Text Format (RTF) is a file exchange format devised by Microsoft. Many packages for Microsoft Windows, such as Microsoft Word, Word Perfect and FrameMaker, can output documents in RTF, which can then be converted to HTML using the conversion program, rtftohtml, which is freely available over the Net.

The rtftohtml program is written in C, and distributed in source form as a compressed tar file. The program is also available in binary form for the Macintosh, and for Sun workstations running SunOS 4.x or Solaris 2.x. The package contains documentation in RTF. This is of quite a high standard, and can be viewed and printed from Microsoft Word or other word processing programs. It can, of course, be converted to HTML using the rtftohtml program itself.

The program can be configured to process non-standard styles and it will cope with embedded images by writing the images to separate files. These files must then be converted to GIF format using an image conversion program, as described in Chapter gif.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
