Server side includes are a feature of the NCSA server, whereby other
files or the output of commands can be inserted into HTML documents
returned by the server. If the feature is enabled and a request is
received for a file with a special extension, such as .shtml,
the server parses the file, searching for and interpreting directives
embedded in HTML comments. These directives are described in
Section . Use of server side includes,
especially in user directories, has implications for security (see
Chapter ).

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the
LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout
using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical
interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since
disappeared.
