Mapping directives

Mapping directives allow parts of the virtual hierarchy of Web resources presented by a server to be distributed across physical file systems, whose hierarchical layout may not match that of the the virtual hierarchy. They allow the physical location of files or directories to be changed without affecting the virtual hierarchy. Using the Redirect directive, resources can even be transparently moved to other servers. The CERN and NCSA servers have similar directives, although the CERN server directives provide greater flexibility.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
