Periodic updating of documents

In cases where the information contained in documents changes periodically, such as on a daily or even an hourly basis, it may be more appropriate to regenerate the documents periodically than to generate them on the fly. There is obviously a trade-off between the time taken to generate the information, with the subsequent delay to the browser and load on the system, and the space taken up with cached information.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
