Le WebLouvre

Le WebLouvre was set up as a private initiative by Nicolas Pioch, who is both a computer science consultant and a student of economics at ENST, the École Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications in Paris. Le WebLouvre has no official connection with the museum, but is named in its honour. The project was started in March 1994, purely for fun!

Le WebLouvre is a virtual art gallery combining around 400 digital images of paintings and other artefacts with informative art history background text. The images have been freely contributed by photographers via the Internet. The WebLouvre pages won the `Best Use of Multiple Media' award in the Best of Web '94 competition. M. Pioch is currently trying to get official French support for the project.

Note: Le WebLouvre (http://mistral.enst.fr/~pioch/louvre/) no longer exists, but here are some of the images from the site as it then was:

The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
