Using images in lists

The list shown in the following example was created using a definition list (DL element) as described in Chapter gif. The small images convey information about the category of the list items, but are really just used as enhanced bullets. The monochrome images used in the list in Figure gif (in the previous chapter) are used for the same ends. Other types of icon, such as shiny coloured balls, are often used as bullets.

Paintings.
Books.
Maps.
Opening times.

If you use such images bear in mind that they will be loaded over the Net, which slows the display of documents in which they are included. Once the browser has loaded an image, it will reuse that copy if it is referenced again. Try to use a small set of such images and avoid having differently named duplicates of the same image.

A number of Web sites keep collections of images which are freely available for general use. The copyright status is not always made explicit, so if in doubt it is advisable to check. These collections include a wide range of icons, coloured bullets, flags and so on.
