A mechanism for retrieving a resource, given its nameThe standard Web retrieval mechanism is HTTP (the Hypertext Transfer Protocol), an Internet protocol. A protocol is a set of rules for the programs at either end of a network link, which tells them how to talk to each other and what meaning to give to the data they receive.
