Widely available servers

The first Web servers were developed for UNIX and that remains the most common platform, but servers are now available for many different operating systems. Servers can be obtained in a precompiled, binary form for many operating systems, but if your particular system is not catered for, it is often quite easy to compile from source code (see Section gif later in this chapter).

There are a number of free HTTP servers available on the Net, the main ones being the CERN, NCSA and GN servers. The CERN and NCSA servers are both fully featured, although the CERN server offers more functionality. They are similar to each other in their configuration methods. The GN server is not only an HTTP server but also a Gopher server, and is configured quite differently.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
