The CERN HTTP
Daemon was the
first Web server, originally written by Tim Berners Lee. Version 3.0
of the CERN HTTP Daemon was released in September 1994, and is
freeware. It supports the following features:
- Can be run from the Internet services daemon (inetd) or standalone.
- Configurable mapping of URLs to files and scripts.
- Configurable typing of resources.
- Access authorization mechanism.
- Automatic generation of directory listings as HTML documents.
- Serving of users' private Web pages.
- Caching of documents when used as a proxy server.
