User directories

These directives are used to specify whether or not local users can serve their own pages directly on the Web without going through the Web administrator. If this feature is enabled, requests starting with /~username/ will be mapped to a subdirectory in the user's home directory, assuming the user has an account on the system. Allowing local users to have their own private Web pages has implications for security (see Chapter gif), and also for the the organization's public image (see Chapter gif).

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
