CERN WWW server

The CERN WWW Server was initially written by Tim Berners Lee at CERN and is still being developed there. It is a full featured server with support for access authorization, sophisticated mapping from virtual URLs to physical files, caching, and good built-in proxy support. The CERN server is available at no charge pre-compiled for many different UNIX systems (including Digital Equipment Ultrix, Digital Equipment OSF/1, Digital Equipment VAX, Hewlett Packard HP/UX, Sun Microsystems Solaris, Sun Microsystems SunOS, IBM RS/6000 under AIX, Silicon Graphics, Linux and Next) and also available in source form:

ftp://ftp.w3.org/pub/www/src/cern_httpd.tar.Z

There is comprehensive, well-written documentation available on the Web, both in HTML and PostScript form. The current version is 3.0, which was released in September 1994.

Note: this HTML document was generated in December 1994 directly from the LaTeX source files using LaTeX2HTML. It was formatted into our standard page layout using the Template Toolkit. The document is mainly of historical interest as obviously many of the sites mentioned have long since disappeared.
